2022 Kentucky Derby horses, contenders, odds, date: The expert who made 9 Derby-Oaks Doubles picks
Updated 2022 Kentucky Derby odds after this week’s draw pushed Zandon from 6-1 to 3-1. Zandon will start from the No. 10 position on Saturday, while former 2022 Kentucky Derby favorite Epicenter comes out the door at No. 3. Epicenter was the 5-1 favorite for weeks but now sits at 7-2 Other 2022 Kentucky Derby horses like White Abarrio (10-1) and Zozos (20-1) have seen their chances improve, while 2022 Kentucky Derby contenders like Messier (8-1) and Taiba ( 12-1) took the other direction. Publication time is 6:57 p.m. ET. With so much to consider, you’ll want to see what SportsLine’s Jody Demling has to say before entering your own 2022 Kentucky Derby picks or your own horse racing predictions.
A staple of the horse racing world who has been writing, speaking and betting on races for years, Demling has been on point with his horse racing betting. He hit the exacta at Wood Memorial in April. Last year he hit the exacta, trifecta and superfecta in the Belmont Stakes. It’s the same handicapper who has pulled off the Derby-Oaks double at Churchill Downs nine times in the past 13 years. That means he’s held a ticket with winners Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby nearly four times in his last 13 tries.
Additionally, at some point in 2020, he picked the winners of six consecutive races: the Saudi Cup, Gotham Stakes, Rebel Stakes, Louisiana Derby, Florida Derby and Belmont Stakes. Anyone who has followed him on those races is top.
Now, with the 2022 Kentucky Derby lineup locked down, Demling is sharing his picks and predictions on SportsLine. Go here to see them.
Best Kentucky Derby 2022 Predictions
One of Demling’s surprising picks for the 2022 Kentucky Derby: He’s fading Epicenter, claiming one of the top favorites barely makes the top three. Epicenter’s five-stage training on May 1 at Churchill Downs did little to move the needle, and it actually ran slower than its last training of the same length. If Epicenter can’t get out of the gate quickly on Saturday, the 2022 Kentucky Derby field risks burying it after the first corner, making it difficult to catch up.
The 2022 Kentucky Derby lineup doesn’t appear to be the fastest group overall, and a potentially wet track after rain on Thursday and Friday could bog things down, even for horses like Epicenter who are known to finish well.
Another stunner: Demling is high on Mo Donegal, even though he is a double-digit long shot and will run from the inside post. The horse seemingly checks every box of what you would want from a Kentucky Derby starter, starting with his racing history. He finished in the money in his five starts and won two progressive stakes races. He is the father of Uncle Mo, who failed to compete in the Kentucky Derby as a three-year-old but has already produced a Derby winner, Nyquist in 2016.
Mo Donegal also has one of the Kentucky Derby’s most experienced coaches, Todd Pletcher, who sent a record 59 starters to Churchill Downs and is a two-time winner. Finally, Mo Donegal hit the speed threshold that has always been a strong sign for the Kentucky Derby, as he sprinted the final 3/8 miles of his final warm-up race in under 38 seconds. Of the last 24 Kentucky Derby winners, 18 of them broke the 38-second mark in their last warm-up race.
How to make picks and bets for the 2022 Kentucky Derby
Demling is particularly high on a bigger double-digit evening long shot who “trained very well at Churchill Downs” and is ready to hit the board hard. Demling shares which horse it is, along with his entire projected ranking, on SportsLine.
