Alec Pierce a long way from winning OROY but Colts rookie can upset the odds
Alec Pierce, the Indianapolis Colts’ first overall pick, didn’t give up much of a chance to win Offensive Rookie of the Year.
The Indianapolis Colts believe they were lucky to select wide receiver Alec Pierce late in the second round of the NFL Draft. The young receiver will be tasked with providing Indy with a more explosive passing offense.
Pierce has already assured Indianapolis that the team made the right call. After a three-day minicamp for rookies, reporters talked about Pierce’s ability to point the ball.
On top of that, former player and current analyst Louis Riddick has already named Alec Pierce as his prediction for Offensive Rookie of the Year.
However, it turns out that Riddick is in the minority, as Pierce’s chances of winning the top offensive rookie award aren’t currently that good.
What are the odds of Alec Pierce winning Rookie of the Year?
Currently on WynnBet, Pierce has +3000 odds of winning Offensive Rookie of the Year. That gives him the 17th-highest rating among offensive players in his draft class.
Of the 16 players with better ratings, nine are receivers. Pierce is tied with Malik Willis, who isn’t even expected to start this season. It shows that Pierce shouldn’t be a player for the price.
However, the odds do not determine who wins the prize, the play on the court does. If Pierce can continue to display the level of dominance he showed during rookie minicamp, his name will surely be in the discussion.
The Colts are desperate for help at wide receiver, so Pierce should have plenty of opportunities. If he can develop his potential in the first year, his name should be in the conversation for rookie of the year. More importantly, he will help Indianapolis win many games.
