LEXINGTON, Virginia – Senior goalie Sara amil (North Caldwell, NJ / West Essex) set the career shutout records for Washington and Lee, as the Generals beat Roanoke 4-0 on Tuesday at W&L Turf Field.
The Blue and White (8-0, 2-0 ODAC) dominated the match, leading in shots, 25-6. W&L only scored 35 seconds after the start of the match, as the junior striker Tess Muneses (Howard County, MD / Glenelg) carried into the circle on the left side and hit a long shot past the goalie.
The Generals extended their lead to 2-0 five minutes later on a penalty corner. Senior Defender Catherine berman (Houston, TX / The Kinkaid School) controlled the ball from the right side and shot the ball towards the center of the circle. Second year midfielder Paige Mammorella (Louisville, Ky./Manual) deflected him into the right corner of the cage for his second goal of the year.
The Maroons (4-5, 0-2 ODAC) had three chances to score in the second, but Amil recorded three saves, his total for the night, during the period to give the Blues & Whites a 2- 0 at intermission. The margin remained at 2-0 until 1:19 to play in the third.
After a foul by Roanoke, the junior striker Kailey fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md. / Georgetown Visitation) brought the ball into the circle on the right side. She stopped as she reached the center and unleashed a backhand shot that sent the ball past the keeper for her third count of the year.
W&L scored their last goal with 9:18 left in the fourth. Muneses passed the ball to the right side and the senior striker Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, PA / Agnes Irwin School) redirected him to the cage for his eighth goal of the season.
The shutout marked Amil’s fourth of the season and his 15th of his career. She was previously tied with Ariyel Yavalar ’19, who finished all four seasons with 14. Amil now has a 0.93 goals-against average this season and a 0.844 save percentage.
Senior Hannah Roerden allowed all four goals for the Maroons in 50:42. She also made eight saves. Sophomore Madison Wingerter played the final at 9:18 and recorded five saves.
The Generals return to action on Saturday when they host Bridgewater at 12:00 p.m. ET.
