Center County remains at low community level for COVID-19; Lowest local hospitalizations in 9 months

Center County remains at the “low” community level for COVID-19 for the third straight week, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s weekly update.

Statewide, 60 of 67 counties are at the low level, with the other seven (six more than last week) at the medium level: Bradford, Montour, Northumberland, Schuylkill, Snyder, Susquehanna and Union.

Introduced February 25, community levels measure not only new cases, but also new hospitalizations and the capacity of local hospitals to determine mitigation guidelines. At the low level, there is no recommendation for indoor masking and at the medium level, masks are only recommended for people at increased risk of serious illness. At the highest level, universal indoor masking in places open to the public is recommended.

Center County was at the high level for the first week of the new measures and fell to the medium level on March 3 before dropping to the low level on March 10. At the low level, a community has less than 200 new cases per 100,000 people over a seven-day period, with less than 10 COVID-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 people and less than 10% of inpatient beds staffed in staff occupied by COVID-19 patients during the same period.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center has two patients hospitalized with COVID-19, two fewer than Thursday, none in intensive care or on ventilators. Patient ages and vaccination status were withheld to protect privacy.

This is the hospital’s lowest COVID-19 inpatient count since June 2021.

Statewide, COVID-19 hospitalizations are at their lowest level since Aug. 2. According to the Department of Health’s Hospital Readiness Dashboard, 531 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 12 fewer than Thursday, including 83 in intensive care. [-9] and 54 sub fans [+4].

Deaths

The DOH removed one COVID-19-related death from Center County’s total, which now stands at 345.

With 28 new deaths from COVID-19 identified by the Pennsylvania Death Registry, the statewide total is now 44,180.

New cases

Center County recorded 12 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday to bring its total to 35,031 since March 2020, according to the DOH.

Of the total cases, 31,109 are confirmed and 3,922 are probable. Center County’s seven-day rolling average for new cases is nine, according to the DOH, up from 10 a week ago and 32 a month ago.

Pennsylvania reported fewer than 1,000 new positives for the 14th time in 15 days. The 726 new cases bring the statewide total to 2,777,986.

The Commonwealth’s seven-day average is 600, down from 747 a week ago and 1,897 a month ago.

Rockview State Prison has no cases of COVID-19 among inmates or staff, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.

The other Center County state prison, Benner, has one case among inmates and one among staff.

In Benner, 1,424 inmates are fully vaccinated, 18 are partially vaccinated, and 189 are unvaccinated. Of the staff, 314 are fully vaccinated and 314 are unvaccinated.

Rockview has 1,716 fully vaccinated, three partially vaccinated and 87 unvaccinated inmates. Of the staff, 349 are fully vaccinated [+1] and 368 are not vaccinated [-1].

Vvaccinations

As of Friday morning, 94,665 people in Center County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 22 since Thursday, and 14,191 are partially covered [+14]. Booster doses were given to 49,634 county residents [+36]

Among the county’s entire population, 69.7% have received at least one dose, 59.3% are fully vaccinated and 51.2% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 75.1% received at least one dose, 63.4% are fully vaccinated and 53.8% received a booster.

Statewide, 77% of adults and 67.5% of the total population are fully immunized.

Vaccination appointments are available via Medical center volunteers, Mount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed on vaccines.gov.

All individuals 12 years and older Is eligible to receive a booster of the COVID-19 vaccine.
