2024 is a unique film that was shot with the camera of a smartphone, instead of the paraphernalia of a professional shooting facility. How was your experience as a filmmaker?
Vikramaditya Motwane: Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work with several great people in the industry and to hone my craft. What I like best as a filmmaker is experimenting with different styles. In my experience, it’s important to approach every movie with a fresh perspective and to make it as true to the story as possible.
As we were creating ‘2024’, I realized that a creative mind is more important than expensive tech equipment to create a compelling story. Using the OnePlus 9 Pro gave me a refreshing perspective on filmmaking and allowed me to experiment with moving camera technology. The OnePlus 9 Pro’s cameras and Hasselblad technology worked as a perfect combination to bring the story to life. The cameras went a long way in preserving the essence and character of the story as they produced beautiful images in all lighting conditions.
A partnership with a filmmaker is unusual for OnePlus, the smartphone market leader in India. What prompted the brand to partner with Vikramaditya Motwane for this company?

At OnePlus, we truly admire Vikram for his cinematic excellence and creative vision. Collaboration with Vikram therefore turned out to be a natural fit in our attempt to shoot a movie with the OnePlus 9 Pro.
We’re curious about the shoot itself. Can you appeal to some of the highlights of the shooting process when using the OnePlus 9 Pro? Do you have any interesting anecdotes about the process of making a movie with us that you remember?
Vikramaditya Motwane: Running entirely on the OnePlus 9 Pro was a really interesting and fun experience for our team involved. What really stood out to us was how easy and less stressful it is to take photos with the device’s robust camera setup which allowed us to capture authentic images and footage.
When shooting with the OnePlus device, we were able to incorporate unique perspectives and were able to easily capture the shots from any necessary angle that we wanted to explore. The advanced features of the smartphone camera also helped us achieve great quality results even in low light conditions.
Can you tell us a bit more about the features of the OnePlus 9 Pro that made this possible, with a focus on the camera?

Vikramaditya Motwane: Wanting to embark on a unique challenge with this project, we had the opportunity to imagine, collaborate and create something interesting until 2024 that still resonates with where we are today.
As the film takes place in a muted Covid pandemic scenario in 2024, the essence of the plot remains extremely relevant to capturing the diverse range of emotions and experiences in the face of adversity. By showing our collective strength as a community, we also wanted to highlight the determination and triumph of the human spirit in difficult scenarios.
Shooting with the OnePlus 9 Pro has constantly motivated us to take refreshing new perspectives to execute our storyline and we’re delighted audiences will be seeing the film soon.
How do you see this cinematic initiative benefiting the creative community of thousands of OnePlus users, who hold the power of this technology in their hands?

During your cinematic journey that spans more than a decade, you are known for your experimental cinema. How would you describe the trip so far and how did that Shot on OnePlus film add another feather to your illustrious hat?
Vikramaditya Motwane: My journey in the film industry has been exciting to say the least. I have had the opportunity to work with several great people in the industry and hone my craft along the way.
As a filmmaker and producer, I like to experiment with different styles. I’ve learned that it’s important to approach every movie with a new lens in order to do the story full justice.
While working on 2024, I realized that art can be expressed in so many ways. And what you need, to create a compelling story, is a creative mind. Working with the OnePlus 9 Pro has given me and our talented team a new and refreshing perspective on filmmaking.
This allowed us to experiment with mobile camera technology. The OnePlus 9 Pro’s cameras along with Hasselblad technology have proven to be a great canvas to bring the story to life. The cameras did a great job producing beautiful images in all lighting conditions and played an important role in preserving the essence and character of the story. I hope our project inspires young filmmakers to experiment with their craft and think outside the box.
“Shot on OnePlus” has been one of the brand’s most successful photography and videography initiatives. But, 2024 takes the initiative to a whole new level with a full commercial film shot on a smartphone camera. What prompted the brand to launch such a campaign?
OnePlus spokesperson: As a brand, OnePlus has often been recognized for constantly innovating and pushing the boundaries in order to bring the best technology and unique experiences to its community. As part of our Shot on OnePlus efforts, we previously created the documentary United by Hope to tell the daily life experiences of people from different walks of life during the pandemic. After witnessing the success of this SOOP documentary, we decided to take it a step further and explore making a feature film.
2024 is shot on our flagship OnePlus 9 Pro 5G, and the idea was to show the true potential and capabilities of the device’s camera with Hasselblad technology. We also wanted the project to serve as an inspiration for our community and all aspiring filmmakers to push their own creative limits using their OnePlus devices.
Technologies evolve and so do we. After this adventure, do you think 2024 will be an inspiration for other films in the future to be created in the same format? Where do you see the future of cinema in the coming years?
Vikramaditya Motwane: Cinema is a creative medium, and filmmakers today have the opportunity to make the most of the evolution of technology to tell their stories through a new approach. Advances in mobile camera technology have enabled users to produce high quality videos using smartphones. The ease of use with smartphones thanks to its portability and virtual invisibility makes them ideal for filming on the fly. Because everyone has one, it’s much easier to film anywhere, whether it’s on the street or at a local cafe. Smartphones have definitely paved the way for budding filmmakers to experiment with tools to bring their stories to life.
